Our Process at
Our Construction Process
Sticky note with good words
We advocate a four step process when selecting a contractor for your project. These are some general steps that help YOU get the best estimate, quality of work, and contractor. We're so confident that you'll select Something Constructive for your next project, we want you to follow these steps and see what a difference our recommendations, character, and craftsmanship will make.
Step One: Start Thinking
What do I hope to accomplish with this new construction or remodel?
Start to gather ideas including pictures and material samples. The more thought out your ideas are, the more easily Something Constructive can make them a reality.

Step Two: Budget
What is my budget?

Remember flooring, furnishings, and all those touches that will make your project a complete success. Also be sure to prioritize what elements are essential and with which ones you are flexible.

Step Three: Selecting a Contractor
What should I keep in mind when interviewing contractors?
  • Compare apples to apples:
Make sure that each bid is for the same work with the same materials. Ask for written specifications and a detailed scope of work from each prospective contractor for you to compare.

  • Money:
For the same project, a companys superior materials, workmanship, integrity, and customer service may bring a higher price tag. You must compare not only the project and materials, but the character of the company with which you want to work.Just because a project is less expensive does not mean it's a better value. Likewise, a more expensive bid does not automatically assure higher quality.

  • Licensing and Insurance:
Something Constructive has General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance. Ask to see your contractors Insurance Certificates. In North Carolina, any home improvement in excess of $30,000 requires construction to be done by a Licensed General Contractor. Bubba Watts, owner of Something Constructive is a North Carolina Licensed General Contractor.

  • References:
Always get references and make sure to CHECK THEM. To insure that the contractor you select is a respected business owner and quality craftsman check both business and customer references. Business references include lumber yards, wholesalers, subcontractors and local code officials. Customer references should include projects done two or more years ago, recent completions, jobs in progress, and any similar to the one you are considering.

  • Permits:
Many home improvements require a permit. The process of obtaining a building permit involves the local county government inspecting the work to provide assurance that your project is in compliance with local and state building codes. Something Constructive will obtain all necessary permits and continuously produces a product that meets and exceeds all building codes. As you search for a contractor, keep in mind that a project completed without necessary permits can lead to faulty construction, unsafe conditions, and possible problems when you decide to sell or transfer your property.
Step Four: Starting the Project
What do I need to consider when preparing a contract with a contractor?
Always detail every agreement and change in contract in writing. Details, details, details. The more communication you have with your contractor, the more likely you both are to be satisfied with the project.
